Number 1 · Bright Red
Ace
The Leader
"Form up!" It's not just a habit. It's a ritual.
Ace is the first ball in the lineup, the one who stands tall when others hesitate. His bright red isn't just aesthetic. Red balls are made with thermite, the compound that gives them their color and a combustive nature: at the right temperature they don't melt, they explode. Red balls learn it as kids, and Ace rarely says it out loud. When he does, it's a warning: "There's a reason I am red." He wakes the team, organizes the schedule, enforces the rules, and keeps the factory — and the monarchy — happy.
His strength isn't just physical. His parents, 42 and 36, are respected double-digit balls who work directly with the monarchy's administrative council, upholding tradition and order in the game factories. Numbered balls are the backbone of the economy, symbols of honor, the monarchy's pride — and Ace grew up believing the system was perfect, until he learned the truth about his grandfather.
Ace's grandfather lives with the family: Arturo, 49. Long ago he spoke out against a change to the games, and the old King, the current King's father, removed his number and his mark of Wisdom for it. He no longer plays, but he carries the truth, and Ace sits with him on the patio for guidance on leadership, on his team, and on how to protect them without provoking the monarchy. Grandfather teaches with a candle as often as with words: "Not everything is as it seems."
Ace is the strongest ball in the realm — he can take on multiple foes at once and hold the line after everyone else has fallen. On the patio, with his hand over Grandfather's candle, he learns why: his gift is that he feels no physical pain. He can still be damaged, and by the end he is, badly. Every evening in the chamber, he calls out "Form up!" — part command, part ritual, a reminder of who they are. For Zero, it's always been a painful reminder of what he can't do. Ace's flaw is status: he protects Zero when nobody's watching, but won't be seen with him. He waves Zero's bus on and sits with the cool numbered balls at lunch. It takes Grandfather, and Zero's hands in his, for Ace to finally see.
