Every ball in Aurelia Coast is born with a four-digit code that unlocks their perfect sphere. Every ball finds theirs eventually — forms up without thinking, fits the tubes, gets drawn, earns the number stamped on their surface. Zero, the youngest of the ten, never has.

Zero

Light blue, small wings, a shape that's never once fit an air chamber tube. Every other ball's code surfaced on its own. Zero's never did. He's guessed at it dozens of times, and every wrong guess has left him more bruised, more afraid, more convinced the story is over before it starts.

It isn't. Zero's code isn't missing. It's locked — for a reason nobody in the realm has figured out yet. Zero included.

"His code isn't missing. It's locked for a reason."
— Zero

The breach

Something is wrong with the realm itself, and the balls who notice first are the ones nobody expects to be listening. Torque hears it in pieces — rumors half-caught through vents and guard chatter, machinery failures nobody's explaining. Nova hears something else entirely: whispers from outside the realm, growing louder by the week, tremors in a fracture that hasn't officially opened yet.

It has, though. A fracture is opening in the Founders' Ruins, high in the hills — not a machinery fault, something worse — and on the other side of it, something is starting to get through. Ace carries the warning to the monarchy himself, Nova's testimony in hand. They call it dramatic. Call it imaginative. Call it misguided.

It isn't.

First contact

The spirits' first assault catches everyone off guard. They swarm Ace, drag him under, and for a moment the team's strongest ball is the team's first casualty — until someone screams the one word that changes everything: "HOARD!"

Gasket transforms, rolls forward, and absorbs every last one of them — a sticky, rolling force of nature that clears the battlefield in seconds. The team's first victory. Nobody expected it, least of all Gasket, who still doesn't quite believe it happened. It won't be the last time the realm needs him. It also won't be this easy again — the spirits learn fast, and by the final battle they know exactly how to keep him out of the fight.

The climax

When the breach finally tears open, the realm nearly doesn't survive it. Ace holds the line until he collapses. Sly is the only one who understands the fracture well enough to work out how to close it — a plan that needs Scout's tools and Torque's nerve, both of them holding a laser stabilizer against a hole in reality while she welds. Glimmer, who's spent her whole life avoiding fights she can't win, talks a panicking crowd back from the edge instead. Gasket gets pinned down, locked out of the one fight that needs him most, and has to watch.

Partway through, Ace turns to Lucky and asks the only question that matters: do we survive this? For the first time in his life, Lucky doesn't know. His insight fails. His luck goes quiet. It's the moment that proves the team was never going to get through this on luck alone — and the moment that pushes everyone else to stop waiting for a sign and start fighting like it's up to them.

Nova gets the one thing she's always wanted: the wormhole, open, the outside world calling her name. She chooses her team instead, taking a place on the laser beside Scout and Torque.

And Captain — who spent years keeping a secret out of fear of losing his own dream — finally hands it over. What he'd been hiding was Zero's form-up code, found years earlier and buried out of fear that giving it up would cost Captain everything he wanted. He gives it up anyway. Then he steps into the breach itself, bracing each side apart with everything he has, holding it from widening any further while the others finish the weld.

Mother's already run the numbers: a hold isn't a seal. Left half-closed, the breach collapses just as surely as it would wide open — slower, maybe, but just as total, and just as catastrophic for everyone in Aurelia Coast. It has to close completely, or none of this was worth it.

Captain holds until it does. Before the tear closes, he passes his sword — the symbol of the pirate captain he always insisted he was — to Zero, to carry until it finds the next 9. He doesn't come back out.

Zero uses the code. For the first time in his life, he transforms.

Still Zero

He doesn't fit the tube. He never did. He fits the destiny — and it took all ten of them, not just him, to get there.

This is the locked version of the story — the beats above aren't changing. The scenes, dialogue, and pacing in between are all still being written. Meet the full cast, or check what's done so far.
