Number 3 · Steel Navy
Torque
The Agent
"Quiet. I do not like going out in the daytime."
Torque is the quietest ball in the realm, and the most dangerous in his own way. He doesn't fight, doesn't shout, doesn't stand in the spotlight — he moves through the world like a whisper, matte navy and almost invisible in low light, carrying subtle gadgets, hearing everything. He's the realm's unofficial intelligence network, even if no one calls him that.
His parents carry no numbers. They live in the lower districts, work ordinary jobs, and taught him how to survive quietly. Growing up, Torque watched numbered balls receive opportunities he could never touch, and learned early that the monarchy doesn't reward curiosity — it punishes it. So he became invisible: moving silently, hiding in plain sight, overhearing guarded conversations, slipping past Mother's surveillance and through the maintenance tunnels, reading danger before anyone else sees it. He trusts almost no one. Ace, maybe: they grew up together, playing on the old railroad tracks long before the trams were built.
He's untrusting, observant, anxious, street-smart, introverted, and deeply insecure — he lacks bravery, avoids fights, avoids attention, avoids danger. What he doesn't avoid is information. Downtown, he deals with a crew of not-so-honest balls who sell secrets about the monarchy, and whatever he learns, he decides who hears it.
He believes his gift is camouflage, though nobody, Torque included, is certain. He can dim his shine, flatten his silhouette, hide behind machinery, disappear into a crowd. It makes him the perfect witness. He's the one who slides Sly a report with a photograph of a small breach in it, and nobody knows where he got it.
What the team doesn't know is that Torque has a partner: Captain. Torque is getting him a ship, due at the dock on Monday at sunset, and if they're discovered, they'll both be melted into nothingness. In the Founders' Ruins, Torque comes in last and hides behind the fighting as best he can. When Gasket is carried out on a stretcher, Torque walks beside him and gives up nothing to help. On Monday at sunset, he meets the ship alone. "He's not coming."
