Number 0 · Light Blue
Zero
Still Figuring It Out
His code isn't missing. Someone's keeping it.
Zero is the youngest of the ten single-digit balls — born light blue, with tiny plane wings that flutter when he's nervous. Every numbered ball carries a four-digit form-up code buried inside them, one that unlocks a perfect sphere for work in the draw chambers. Every numbered ball learns their code growing up. Every one forms up without thinking. Every one fits the tubes. Every one gets drawn eventually. Except Zero.
His code never surfaced. He never transformed, never fit the tubes, never got selected. He's guessed at it dozens of times, and every wrong guess has gone worse than the last — a misfired form-up twists the body, distorts the wings, and once even set off the factory alarms. Zero's been bruised, bent, and terrified by his own attempts more than anyone else on the team. He's shy because he's scared of hurting someone. He's forgetful because he's still carrying the last failure. He's withdrawn because every wrong attempt felt like a punishment. No zero has been drawn since he joined the team, the guards laugh at him, and the rumor around school is that he's about to be replaced.
He watches the others form up like it's nothing — Ace with strength, Sly with elegance, Torque with stealth, Lucky with luck — and wonders why he's the only one who can't. But Zero's code isn't missing. Captain found it, in the bottom-right corner of Zero's own plans inside one of Mother's manufacturing facilities, and has kept it to himself. And Zero's strange shape isn't a mistake. In the Founders' Ruins, cut off from the breach room with only a narrow tube between them, Zero hears Captain scream his code. He forms up for the first time: his damage repairs itself, his wings fold away, and the tube turns out to be sized perfectly for him. He throws the laser to full power. When he returns to his walk-around form, he has fully formed aircraft wings with engines, and a mark where his 0 used to be: the mark of flight. He doesn't fit the tube. He fits the destiny.
